1. Wax Resist
WAX RESISIT is a type of glaze decoration that involves the application of a coat of one glaze, then painting a wax pattern, then applying a second coat of the same or a different glaze. The wax resists the second glaze from adhering, allowing the painted design to show.

•        Edges of design should be crisp
•        Matte surface should be smooth, not porous
•        Design should be correctly placed
•        Colors should be per spec
•        No show-through from color underneath
•        Fine details carefully outlined

2. Wax Resist with Painting
The design has been done with a wax resist (debossed) into the plate to give the shapes of the trees and deer and then a color glaze was applied inside the wax resist.

3. Wax Resist with Debossing/Embossing
•        Exact registration of color and shape, no overflow or offset from debossed outline
•        Even background color
•        No show-through
•        Surface glaze applied evenly
•        Colors bright and evenly applied
•        Good contrast between matte and gloss glazes if spec’d

4. Decals
White decal on dark backgrounds can be achieved by the decal being struck twice with the white color. The decal will be a little thicker than a normal decal but this helps give the decal a nice crisp white color. Another way to achieve the crisp white is to apply a decal on top of another decal.
•        Decal color bright, even on dark background
•        Crisp, clean outlines
•        Colors not muddy or dull
•        Decal evenlyapplied,centered & straight
•        Watch for decal splitting or crackingafter firing

5. Embossing
Embossing is a raised pattern on the surface produced either in the mold or formed separately and applied before firing.
•        Clear, even outlines
•        Consistent height of embossing
•        Glaze does not pool or drip

6. Debossing
Debossing is when the design is stamped into the surface.

7. Reactive Glazes
Reactive glaze is when the glaze chemical formulations react with the kiln’s heat to form a non-uniform, lead free colors on the ceramic surface.

8. Glazes
•        No pinholes or scratches
•        No drips, blotches or pooling of glaze
•        Even colors, applied consistently

9. Hand Painted
Handpainted is when a person uses a paintbrush to apply the glaze to the ceramic surface.
•        Colors bright and per specification
•        Designs applied as evenly as possible without overlaps or gaps
•        No pinholes, streaks, blotches, drips
•        Observe matte and gloss contrasts
•        Match color specs or swatches as closely as possible

10. Antique
Antiquing is when a person uses a dry paintbrush to apply the glaze to the ceramic surface to make the ceramic look old and achieve a used effect.

11. Pierced
Pierced is when the design is cut out of the ceramic surface so light can be seen through the holes.

12. Glossy and Matte Finish
Glossy finish is smooth, shiny and light reflects off of the surface.
Matte finish is dull and flat but still has a smooth surface texture.
Surface should be evenly coated and smooth, not rough.
