Grinding disk testingAs Europe’s oldest independent grinding wheel test laboratory, MPA-Hannover has been performing grinding wheel safety testing for 45 years.

The European standards EN 12413 “Safety requirements for bonded abrasive products” and EN 13236 “Safety requirements for superabrasives” stipulate legally binding safety parameters for grinding tools. The grinding tool testing procedures contained within these standards were mainly developed by MPA-Hannover in collaboration with the former DSA (German Grinding Disk Committee), e.g. for manual cut-off grinding wheels, centrifugal force, lateral force and drop hammer testing. In accordance with the BGR 500 accident prevention regulations and the “Equipment and product safety act” (GPSG), the safety parameters must be complied with when grinding tools are brought into circulation or used. Adherence to these parameters is up to the manufacturers and resellers.

All kinds of testing on rotating grinding tools with a diameter of 80 to 1600 mm and weighing up to 660 kg is carried out in the “Centre of Competence for Abrasive Tools” (CCA), at the MPA-Hannover test laboratory. The CCA test stands are also used to perform scientific research on grinding tools. Many research projects, some of which are public funded (e.g. by DFG, VDS, AIF), and publications have contributed towards improving knowledge in the area of rotating grinding tools and developing new testing procedures.

MPA-Hannover is accredited according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025 for the testing of grinding wheels and similar products in accordance with the European Standards EN 12413,EN 13236/A1, EN 13743 and others. Thus MPA-Hannover underlines its position as a leading European test laboratory for rotating grinding wheels.

The safety certificates that we issue have achieved global significance. Both German and foreign manufacturers of grinding and cutting wheels have their products tested voluntarily so that they can mark them with an MPA number. For many well-known, international importers, it is a matter of course for us to test their products before they go onto the market. (list of references)
Our own representation in Shanghai, Shanghai Sunzone Business Consulting Co. Ltd., and collaboration with TÜV Rheinland Dalian have enabled MPA-Hannover to monitor the expanding Chinese market for adherence to European safety standards. MPA-Hannover is available as an independent assessor in the event of grinding wheel accidents.

Testing for manufacturers
The international accreditation of MPA-Hannover as a testing institute for grinding wheels and comparable products gives clients the confidence of knowing that our test reports are recognised and accepted worldwide as proof of safety.

The test reports that we produce provide information about the actual safety parameters that are determined during testing, such as bursting speed (centrifugal force test), single-point and/or three-point lateral load and work capacity (drop hammer test) for bonded grinding disks (EN 12413) and centrifugal force safety and measurements of the bending strength of diamond grinding wheels (EN 13236).

If the safety test is passed, the manufacturer receives a safety certificate with a test certificate containing all of the safety-related information. The certificates are valid for two years and can be extended after this time by re-testing. The owners of valid MPA certificates can mark their grinding wheels with the MPA certificate number.

Certificates are only issued to grinding disk manufacturers if they declare in writing that they agree to irregular, unannounced production checks by employees or representatives of MPA-Hannover.

Testing for importers
Random samples are taken by representatives or employees of MPA-Hannover or neutral sampling companies in the country of origin before the grinding wheels are dispatched, sealed and sent to MPA-Hannover for testing. These samples are checked for adherence to standard-related safety parameters. The client receives a written test report that contains a brief version of the test results and serves as proof of safety testing before the products reach the dealers

Testing for dealers and consumers
We test rotating grinding tools that are already in circulation. We also produce assessments for courts, insurance companies and trade boards.

MPA-Plus Service
The MPA-Plus service is a special service for importers of Chinese grinding wheels, both for bonded grinding disks (EN 12413) and diamond grinding disks (EN 13236).

Experts from MPA-Hannover take several samples from a batch of grinding wheels from the manufacturer during production. Some of the disks are checked for adherence to the safety parameters in accordance with the relevant EN standard on site using the manufacturer’s testing equipment. These tests are independent of the manufacturer’s own testing.

The rest of the wheels are tested on the MPA-Hannover test stands. Depending on the client’s requirements, this testing is carried out at the beginning and around the middle of production. We do not just test safety-related parameters but also provide advice on the labelling and marking of the disks and subsequent packing. Another inspection takes place just before the end of production or before the goods are shipped, both in China and at MPA-Hannover. We organise these inspections ourselves, right through to customs processing of the shipment, so that the client has only one contractual partner.

The client receives test reports for the random sampling that has been carried out that contain the measuring results and a certificate containing the batch number and the data for the individual inspections. This provides the client with maximum confidence that the products that he has ordered meet European safety requirements.
