Interpretation of the industry classification under NAICS

311Food Manufacturing

Industries in Food Manufacturing subsector transform livestock and agricultural products into products for intermediate or final consumption.

312Beverage and Tobacco Product Manufacturing

Industries in Beverage and Tobacco Product Manufacturing subsector manufacture beverage and tobacco products and they are sub-divided into:
3121Beverage Manufacturing
3122Tobacco Product Manufacturing

313Textile Mills

The main processes in this subsector include preparation and spinning of fiber, knitting or weaving of fabric, and the finishing of textile. Excluded from this subsector are establishments that weave or knit fabric and make garments. These are included in subsector 315, Apparel Manufacturing. Knitting, when done alone, is classified in Textile Mills subsector; but when knitting is combined with the production of complete garment, the activity is classified in Apparel Manufacturing.

314Textile Products Mills

The manufacturing of textile products (except apparel) from purchased fabric is classified in this subsector. Processes used in this subsector are generally cut and sew (i.e. purchasing fabric and cutting and sewing to make nonapparel textile products, such as sheets and towels).

315        Apparel Manufacturing

Industries in this subsector group establishments with two distinct manufacturing processes: (1) cut and sew (i.e., purchasing fabric and cutting and sewing to make a garment) and (2) the manufacture of garments in establishments that first knit fabric and then cut and sew the fabric into a garment.

316        Leather and Allied Product Manufacturing

Establishment in this subsector transform hides into leather by tanning or curing and fabricating the leather into products for final consumption. It also includes the manufacture of similar products from other materials, including products (except apparel) made from “leather substitutes”, such as rubber, plastics, or textiles. Rubber footwear, textile luggage, and plastics purses or wallets are examples of “leather substitutes”.
Specific for establishments engaged in footwear manufacturing, there is:
3162Footwear Manufacturing

321Wood Product Manufacturing

It includes establishments that make wood products from logs and bolts that are sawed and shaped, and establishments that purchase sawed lumber and make wood products.

322Paper Manufacturing

It includes the manufacturing of pulp and manufacturing of converted paper products.

323Printing and Related Support Activities

Industries in this subsector print products, such as newspapers, books, periodicals, business forms, greeting cards, and other materials, and perform support activities, such as bookbinding, platemaking services, and data imaging. This industry comprises establishments engaged in printing on apparel and textile products, paper, metal, glass, plastics, and other material, except fabric (grey goods). Establishments in this industry do not manufacture the stock that they print but may perform postprinting activities, such as bending, cutting, or laminating the materials they print, and mailing.

324Petroleum and Coal Product Manufacturing

This subsector is based on the transformation of crude petroleum and coal into usable products. The dominant process is petroleum refining and further process of refined petroleum and coal products.

325Chemical Manufacturing

It is based on the transformation of organic and inorganic raw materials by a chemical process and the formulation of products. However, it does not include any transforming raw chemicals by a chemical process. Examples are: manufacturing of dye, pigment, resin, synthetic rubber, pesticides, fertilizers, pharmaceutics, medicine, paint and coating, soap and cleaning compound.

326Plastics and Rubber Products Manufacturing

This subsector make goods by processing plastics material and raw rubber. Examples are: manufacturing of plastic bag, laminated sheet, polystyrene foam, plastic bottle and containers, rubber hoses and tubing.

327Nonmetallic Mineral Product Manufacturing

This subsector transforms mined or quarried nonmetallic minerals, such as sand, gravel, stone, clay and refractory materials into products for intermediate or final consumption. This subsector includes establishments that manufacture products, such as bricks, refractories, ceramic products; and glass and glass products, such as plate glass and container. Also included are cement and concrete products.
3271Clay Product and Refractory Manufacturing
3272Glass and Glass Product Manufacturing

331Primary Metal Manufacturing

Industries in this subsector smelt and/or refine ferrous and nonferrous metals from ore, pig or scraps; manufacture metal alloys and superalloys.

332Fabricated Metal Product Manufacturing

Industries in this subsector transform metal into intermediate or end products. Important fabricated metal processes are forging, stamping, forming, and machining, used to shape individual pieces of metal; and other processes, such as welding and assembling, used to join separate parts together.

333Machinery Manufacturing

Similar to those used in metal fabricating establishments, machinery manufacturing is different because it typically employs multiple metal forming processes in manufacturing the various parts of the machine.

334Computer and Electronic Product Manufacturing

It involves the manufacture of computers, computer peripherals, communications equipment, and similar electronic products.

335Electrical Equipment, Appliance, and Component Manufacturing

Industries in this subsector manufactures products that generate, distribute and use electrical power. For examples: electric lighting equipment, household appliance, motors, transformer, batteries, wiring devices, etc.

336Transportation Equipment Manufacturing

Industries in this subsector produce equipment for transporting people and goods.

337Furniture and Related Product Manufacturing

Industries in this subsector make furniture and related articles, such as mattress, window blinds, cabinets and fixtures.

339        Miscellaneous Manufacturing

This subsector consists of a wide range of products that cannot readily be classified n the specific NAICS subsectors. The industries in below subsectors are defined by what is made rather than how it is made.
