Machinery and heavy equipment:
You should reference every heavy equipment in the factory and mention their model and number. It is very important so that if the client wants to find out some information about one of this equipment, he could do it easily.
If you find security instructions but that they are clearly never read by the workers (for example, if they are stored in a closet instead of the working site) or that you can see that they are obviously not applied (for example, if it written to wear gloves and that nobody does it), the score should not be higher than 1.
Every heavy machine where the operator should use his hands to set it in motion with a hazard of compressing or wounding should have a double switched operating system. If you do not find it for at least one machine that required it, the score should not be higher than 1.
When you count the number of employees per operating machine, you should not refer to what the factory said but count it by yourself.
As for the fire emergency training, if the factory can not show a written proof with signature of trained workers and the date, even if they say that they trained their workers, the score should not be higher than 1. Please also, talk about this during the interviews.
According to your previous experiences and knowledge, you should know what kind of protective equipment should be used by workers. If, you find that less than 50% of workers use protective equipment whereas they should, the score should not be higher than 2. If you find that less than 25% of workers use protective equipment whereas they should, the score should be 0.
Don’t forget that you should only assess protective equipment that should be used by the workers. It means that, for example, if they don’t have to wear helmets, you should delete this from the report and modify the general score according to this. You should NOT assess it to a score of 5.
- Electrical installation:
When you check the date of installation and date of review, you should not only ask to the factory but always look what is written on the installation’s label and only believe it.
If the electrical installation is reviewed less than once a year, the score should not higher than 1.
When you check the isolation of electric parts, you should check that there is no damage and that no one could have access to hazardous parts. You should also take a look at their general shape. Indeed, if you find a lot of rust or dust, it means that nobody is taking care of it so the score should not be higher than 2.
You should have at least one circuit-breaker per floor. If not, the score should be 0.
2.2 Health and Hygiene:
- Medical care:
If medical equipments are not checked at least every year, the score should not be higher than 1.
If you find less than one first aid kit for 200 employees, the score should not be higher than 2. Don’t forget to check the content of first aid kits, if you find any empty bottles or some products with an outdated limit date, it means that they are useless and so the score should not be higher than 1.
If there is no sick bay or medical service in the factory, it means that every emergency in case of injury can not be resolved on the working site, so the score should be 0.
- Commodities:
When you check drinkable water spots, don’t forget to check the water supplying. If there is less than another reload of water, the score should not be higher than 1. Don’t forget to also check if workers can have hot or cold water.
When you check worker’s bedrooms, you should notify how many people are slipping in the same bedroom and the approximate number of square meters. If you find less than 5 square meters per worker, the score should be 0.
You also need to check their bathrooms and toilets. Please consider the general shape. For example, if you find that it is not clean and that people can not flush, the score should not be higher than 1. Please also check if people can access to hot water in the bathrooms. If they can not, the score should not be higher than 2.
If they do not have any kitchen or canteen, the score should be 0.
2.3 Child labor and forced labor:
For every part, where you need to check labor, please read and refer carefully to the corresponding SA 8000 extract that you can find in your protocol.
- General questions:
For all questions about child and forced labor, you should notify the opinion according to the management but most of all according to the workers.
For example, If the management says that there is no one working under the legal age but you find someone doing it, the score should be of course 0.
When you can, if you find different opinion between management and workers, try to find some written proofs.
For example, if the management says that the workers should not deposit their ID but the workers deny it, you should check the employee register or ID of employees to try to find some proofs.
In every case, if there is an opinion’s difference between management and workers, you should always consider the staff’s opinion as true, except if you find a proof that contradict it. |
