The following general guidelines apply to all garment types:
All measurements are to be taken with garments laid on a flat surface, in a natural position, free of tension and with wrinkles smoothed out. Where crinkle type fabrics are used, do not stretch out the crinkle.
All measurements are to be taken with a standard tape measure and must be checked periodically for accuracy against a steel ruler.
All stretch measurements are done until the fabric lays flat. The fabric should not be distorted, nor the elastic be extended to its ultimate width.
When measuring from centre back, fold garment to establish centre back.
When measuring Back Neck Seam:
> Woven always measure on the seam.
> Cut and Sew and Knits always measure straight.
All circumference measurements and grade rules are taken on the half/flat, with the following exceptions:
Women’s skirt, pants and shorts circumference measurements.
Neck circumference and collar point to point may be measured with garment folded, but they are total measurements.
All extended measurements should be the minimum stretch measurement. All elasticized stretch measurements are done until the fabric lays flat.
Pleats should be specified if measurement is taken with pleat closed or opened.
All measurements should be taken on the front of the garment with buttons and/or zippers fully closed, unless otherwise stated.
For all buttoned garments, button should be at the end of buttonhole for measurement of the circumference of waistbands and cuffs.
Button spacing should be measured from centre of button to centre of button.
Appropriate measurement tolerances are chosen by garment type and by fabric characteristics. Tolerances are determined by the product developer and are detailed on the garment specification. |
