1. Introduction:

One of the most important parts in a QualityInspection is the AQL Inspection where you need to list every defectthat you found on a sampling-size of the inspected products.

2. Standard definition of the 3 defect categories:

You can find three types of defects on a product. Indeed it could be CRITICAL, MAJOR or MINOR. It is really important that you clearly know the differences between them. Here is a definition for each one:

-  Critical: A product has a critical defect when the defect is dangerous for the user or reject by import custom and against the law of import country.
Example: Electric leakage is a critical defect because it means that the product’s user could be electrocuted so it is really dangerous for him.Warning label missing can also be considered as a critical defect because the product will be considered as against the law of import country.
Some defects that could be considered as potentially critical will also be classified as criticalbecause they will not cause direct hazard but potential risks for theconsumer. For example: the langage used for the instruction manual isnot correct.

-  Major: A product has a major defect when it is not dangerous, but cannot be sold because of this defect.
Example: Product broken is a major defect because it is not dangerous for the user but the product can not be sold. Important scratches can also be considered as a major defect because the client can not sell the product.

-  Minor: A product has a minor defect when it is not dangerous and can be sold, but has lost some of its initial value.
Example: Poor stitching is a minor defect because it is not dangerous, it can be sold but it has lost some of its initial value. Dirt marks is also a minor defect because the product can be sold but not at the same price due to the lack of quality.

This classification above is the standard we use for our Inspection. If the client wishes to classify defects in another category (for example dirt marks as major) then you will follow the client requirement. Indeed, some clients want us to focus more on some defects because those are more important for their products.

3. Selection of defect category:

You will have a list (furnished by client) in the Inspection Protocol of possible defects to focus on during the quality inspection but this list is not restrictive. It often appears that you find another kind of defects not described by the client.
In this case, you will have to describe the defectin the report and then define in which category you can classify it(CRITICAL, MAJOR or MINOR).
