MANDATORY TEST REQUIREMENTS
  • BS EN 1860-1 Appliances, solid fuels and firelighters for barbecuing.
  • 89/109/EEC for surfaces of and coatings on parts of the barbecue coming into contact with the food to be barbecued (cooking grid, spit, meat forks and gravy trays).

MANDATORY PRODUCT REQUIREMENTS
  • Bowls and lids must be porcelain/baked enamelled coated.
  • All exterior fixings must offer weather resistance e.g. aluminium, zinc/chrome plating.
  • Timber handles/lid knobs cannot be constructed from any endangered hardwoods. If in doubt refer to
    “The Good Wood Guide’ issued by Friends of the earth.
  • Handle welds/fixings must be sufficient in relation to the size/weight of the Lid to prevent bending/flexing during use.
  • All edges and corners which are accessible must not be sharp or burred.
  • BBQ must be designed in order to allow insertion or removal of accessories without affecting stability
  • Minimum uncoated thickness of steel sheet for fuel compartments must be 0.7mm in conjunction with En 1860-1
  • Minimum uncoated thickness of cast metal for fuel compartments must be 2.5mm in conjunction with En 1860-1
  • Clearance between cooking grid bars must not exceed 20mm.
  • Cooking grids up to 400mm diameter must be fitted with a handle; cooking grids over 400mm dia must be fitted with two handles.
  • A gripping device must be fitted to allow the BBQ to be moved safely.
  • BBQ must have visible markings at least 2mm (3mm capitals) in height detailing- CAUTION!
    do not use spirit, petrol or comparable fluids for lighting or re-lighting
  • Model or type designation must be present on the packaging.

KEY INSPECTION REQUIREMENTS
  • A minimum of 5% of sample must be fully assembled with the following being inspected.
  • General appearance (firebowl, cooking grid, legs, windshield, sauce pan) - no sharp edges or burrs, no rust/corrosion, no pitting, coating is clean and scratch free.
  • Dimensions/weights- cooking grill, grid wire, grill handle, fire bowl, warming rack, legs, spit, sauce pan, bowl hand, wheels and overall size.
  • Material- (type, hardness, torque etc) cooking grill, grill handle, warming rack, fire bowl, wind shield, sauce pan, Leg, Bowl handle, spit, wheels and screws.
  • Performance- loading test, load 0.25 kg/dm2
    on cooking grill let stand for 1 min ensure deformation of grid bar is no more than 5%.
  • Stability – at a slope of 10% load the spit 0.5kg per 100mm, 75% of fire bowl capacity with charcoal. The appliance should not tip over.
  • On a level surface load the spit 0.5kg per 100mm, 1kg/ dm2 for cooking grill. the appliance should not be distorted, loose or broken.
  • Wheel function- should all turn smoothly.
  • Construction assembly test against instructions verifying they can be easily followed and understood.
  • Depth of bowl is more than 50 mm for 400mm dia, 60mm for more than 400mm dia.
  • Clearance between cooking grid bars must not exceed 20mm.
  • Length of handles must be more than 100mm.
