General Requirement:
.
All certification must be less than 2 years old and must be valid for the life
of the Catalogue or Website into which an item has been selected.
.
Certification must be from an accredited Test Laboratory which must be
accredited to test the specific product by an Accreditation Body. The
Accreditation Body must be a full member of at least one of:
1.
European Co-Operation for Accreditation (EA) www.europeanaccreditation.
org
2.
International Accreditation Forum (IAF) www.iaf.nu
3.
International Laboratory Accreditation Co-operation (ILAC) www.ilac.org
Detailed Product Testing : Bedsteads
.
For Adult beds, mattress length minimum 190cm, testing is required to BS EN
1725 Domestic Furniture for Beds and mattresses, safety requirements and test
methods for Adult beds only
.
For Junior beds with a mattress size upto 140cm x 70cm (standard cot/ cot-bed/
junior bed size), testing is required to BS EN 716, excluding the sides and ends,
but including gaps and all strength tests. BS EN 716 -1:1996 with the exception
of clauses 4.2.2, 4.2.7, 4.2.8, 4.2.9, 4.2.11, 4.4.1,4.4.3, 4.4.6, 4.4.7, and 4.6
ADDITIONAL Requirements dependant on design/type

BS EN 71 – Part 3 Toxicity would be applied to areas of the bed considered to
be at risk of chewing etc by a child.

BS EN 747 -1: Gaps would also be applied where appropriate, it cannot be
determined exactly which clauses would be tested until the sample has been
inspected by the relevant QA Engineer, as some of the tests may not be suitable
due to the bed construction. (Some of the tests in this standard may be more
appropriate then BS EN 716 – 1 depending on the age range of the bed)

UPHOLSTERED BEDSTEADS
.
BS 7177: Domestic Use (Low Hazard) Resistant to ignition with source-
Cigarette BS EN 597-1 and BS EN 597-2 – Match. Under the Furniture and
Furnishings Regulations the backing fabric on the back of the head, foot rails is
classed as ‘VISIBLE’ : BV & FIRA Aug2007-See Figure 1 in Process Test
Requirements.

ALL filling whether foam or non foam filling must comply to the following test
requirement

REQUIREMENTS
· Where the design of the head and foot boards include holes/cut outs, they must
be less than 5mm and greater than 12mm, but less than 20mm.
· Timber frames cannot be constructed from any endangered hardwoods. IF in
doubt, refer to “ The Good Wood Guide” issued by Friends of the Earth.
· Colour of filler should match all surrounding product.
Where upholstered – labelled with display swing label and labelled in accordance
with The Furniture and Furnishings Fire Safety Regulations.
· Buttons and similar parts that could present a choking hazard if removed must
withstand a pull test of 90N without detaching (Reference En71-1 Safety of Toys.
Mechanical and physical properties).
· ALL beds must be manufactured to the Size Tolerance – see Section on In
Process Test Requirements re Specification- Figure 2.
· ALL Headboards must be manufactured to the Headboard Specification – refer to
Headboard Product Manual.
Single Beds Only
· Gaps between bars / spindles on head and foot boards must be between 45 65mm.
· Designs that could present a risk of head or limb entrapment must carry an age
warning of 6 years plus in the catalogue text.
Junior Beds
· In addition to the requirements for Single Beds, the following are applicable to
Junior Beds. Junior Beds are intended for use by a child between the ages of 18
months and up to 16 years, depending on the design. Due to the complex nature
of these products, the following must be considered. All final decisions will be
taken by the relevant QA Engineer:
· Junior Beds intended for children up to 6 years of age: Permitted gap sizes
(excluding mattress slats to be 45mm to 60mm) includes Mid-Sleeper beds.
· Finger traps – gaps to be less than 5mm; between 12mm and 20mm; not greater
than 20mm. All larger gaps to be considered separately.
